Is Microsoft Security Essentials any good? ANSWERED

Monday, December 13, 2010 at 11:42 pm

I was going to install AVG on my new PC but I noticed Windows 7 comes with Microsoft Security Essentials, an anti-virus.

Is it any good? Or good enough?

Update: Yes, it seems good. I’ll use it.

  1. If there’s one thing people have told me it is that nothing that comes prepackaged with Windows is good enough, at least as far as antiviruses are concerned. A lot of them recommended Avast! to me, too.

  2. I advice Avast! too, it’s free and i never had serious virus problems since i began using it.

  3. I’d go for Avast also. I used to use AVG till they overhauled it. Then it wouldn’t intall on my XP. I’ve heard MSSE is good but I don’t really trust free MS stuff. I also use Malware Bytes antimalware scanner for a second opinion. All free cause I’m broke.

  4. As long as it’s not awful, even if not the best, I’ll just be lazy and leave it there.

  5. I use it. came to advised b my friend who works with computers for a living. hadnt had any problem really.

  6. I helped my friends to get computer with window 7 last year. My opinion is that Windows 7 is not a perfect one because it keeps getting errors then repaired them itself often so I think security may not perfect as it may receive an error so hackers can find weakness. Window 7 shows a lot of weaknesses so I better to buy which is more security than window 7. Aol offered mcafee but I think they offer Norton which I am not sure. Comcast offers too.

  7. mse is highly recomended on (g) and my best friend who is a pc geek told me to get it,thats all the advice i can offer

  8. i use it and it catches virus’s and such pretty well, it allways autoupdates it’s self and does not slow down your computer when you scan

  9. Do what I do; system restore after every use of the internet. Then set up a new check point. Repeat. No virus protection neccasary.

  10. I think Windows Defender is sufficient. You don’t really risk getting viruses unless you’re downloading programs from random persons so you don’t really need anti-virus except to check anything you’re not sure is okay…I mean, I don’t really get viruses.

  11. It’s good. Detects viruses on thumb-drives automatically, which is more than other anti-virus software does, it’s easy to set-up, and I’ve had no problems since I’ve installed it.

  12. i dont trust anything that microshaft creates unless its been tried and true for 5+ years(XP/2000) ive been using win7 for about 6monts now(on my laptop) and i still dont feel comfortable with it as for security goes get COMODO internet security (fire wall,anti-virus,file monitor(defense+),and sandbox) best of all its free

  13. I use free AVG, and it’s fine for me. Can;t say for sure for Essentials. I only have XP pro.

  14. You’re kidding, Caddie?

  15. Yeah MSE is great. I use it all the time with my clients.

  16. Another comment:

Research. U’ll find MSE has one of the best detection rates around (even beating most paid products)… Much better than Avast! or AVG.

  17. Research….

  18. Also

    MSSE not for me.
If your’e lazy just get a second scanner and maybe spyware blaster, also free but it’s an easy manual update. Just click.

  19. You researched or you’re telling me to Google it?
Cuz I did, I just wanted opinions from here.

  20. I got my results from PCWORLD I was answering SNODONGZ comment about you having to “research” it. I did it for you.
In my opinion and PCWORLD MSSE is good just not as good as AVAST. Even with Avast I have
    Malware bytes antimalware scanner
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and
    Spywareblaster
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ and
    Galry Utilities
    http://www.glaryutilities.com/
All free versions, caveat about Glary during installs I always opt out of toolbars and the other stuff.
