Eva’s Warsaw Pact weapons: the Dragunov

Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 7:46 pm

I’m reading The Gun, by C.J. Chivers, the history of the Kalashnikov family of firearms and the birth of the machine gun, from the Gatling to the M-16. So I decided to sketch some Warsaw Pact weapons for fun.

Click for full size.

I might’ve messed up the perspective, cuz I don’t think the Dragunov is supposed to look THAT big. So let’s say it’s Eva who’s small. The AK-47′s barrel is too short to make a good sniper rifle, so the Dragunov fills that role. Though it shares some resemblance to the AK, it is not part of the Kalashnikov family. Apparently it’s not the best sniper rifle, but the Russians have a different system: they have snipers in their platoons, instead of having special sniper teams. It’s a simple weapon made for the average good marksman, simple to use, instead of a uber specialized rifle of a professional sniper. (That’s what I’ve gathered. If I’m wrong, give me details.)

  1. Your standard Dragnov was either of the Type 79 or Type 85. And believe it or not are Chinese made not Russia.
There is a third generation made in Iran that is a copy of the Type 79. A copy of a copy is never as good as the original.

Looks like Eva is using the Chinese Type 79 because it have the mounted cheek pad and the 10 round magazine and flash suppressor. One of the better and more common Russian used variants.

This lends even more credit to the theory that Eva is Ex-Spetsnaz.

    - you are mistaken. the original Russian made SVD had both. And Chinese made copies were never all that good (based on personal experience).
It plays the same role as M14 (or the newer M14 EBR) – a weapon for platoon designated marksman. Russian army still retains actual sniper teams, who utilize the “uber specialized” rifles like SV-98.

  3. Actually the Dragunov SVD its used for sniping as well; many russian sniper teams still use the SVD to engage targets at 1200 meters with proper low drag ammo and a different scope as well.

  4. I own a Dragunov and a FPK/RomakIII. Looks close enough to me. Komblockid

  5. The SVD is still in use in the Middle East. Though I have never heard of anyone getting a confirmed kill at more that 1000 yards.
The Dragnov is not a extreme long distance rifle like most specialized sniper rifle. it only have an effective range of about 700yrds, though from personal use I notice a huge difference in bullet drop pass 500yrds.

It really shines as a urban sniper rifle. Its great for guerrilla style attacks because of its light weight and semi auto fire. Because its not bolt action like most precision rifles it allows you to put several rounds on the target(s) quickly. Making it great for attacking small patrols or recon squads.

Before anyone points out that Eva shouldn’t be smoking because it could give away her position, I will point out that urban/guerrilla/terrorist snipers fire from inside covered locations(buildings, vehicles, etc) so the smoke trail would not give her away. And in an urban environment it would server to camouflage her as most organized soldiers/military are not allowed to smoke on duty if at all(depending on military) and the casual act would make her seem nonchalant to the causal observer.

  6. Eva would smoke either way. lol

  7. the weapon Eva is using is mosly a chinese vertion of the dragunov. because as i seen the magazine is next to the trigger guard. the original dragunov have the magazine around 3 inch in front of the trigger guard because they don’t use the same bolt system as the AK.

  8. Chinese weapons?! blech! She could be using a Romanian PSL. In fact I think Eva would be more likely to use a weapon from an old Soviet Satellite nation instead of some ChiCom piece of garbage. Azrael is correct in his observation regarding the space between the trigger guard and the magazine however, it cannot be a Russian SVD.

  9. Where’s the RPG??!!

  10. Its not Romanian Kingsnake.
This is a Romanian “Eastern Block” PSL:

And this is the type 79 Russian/Chinese SVD:

The key difference is the foregrip.

The PSL comes only with the AK style 4 hole heat shield, the Chinese and Russian SVDs come with the standard 6 hole heat shield.

Also the PSL has a shorter housing for the firing chamber and trigger mech. You will notice how on the PSL the magazine sits flush with the trigger guard yet on the Russian/Chinese SVD there is a space between the two like Eva’s picture above.

The stock style is another way to tell but not always the best since people can switch them out.

The Romainian PSL is nothing more than a long barreled Ak with a scope.

  11. How do I shot RPG?

    It’s coming.
