Chaos Cinema: shaky cam and hyper editing

Here’s an interesting essay on the kind of film making that plagues recent movies, the best example being Micheal Bay.

  1. Yup. And the aggravating thing is that everyone seems to be perfectly fine with this style of filmmaking. Even people who should know better.

  2. I am perfectly fine with this style of filmmaking.

    – WITHIN MODERATION.

As the narrator points out, almost EVERY movie nowadays does this, and THAT is a problem. But the style itself isn’t a bad thing. I liken it to Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and the entire 90′s comic art world’s love of crosshatching back in those days. It was offensive in its over-saturation, but the technique itself has its practical uses, much like hyper spastic shaky cam moviemaking.

  3. This makes me want to slap the kid. Who is he to say theres only one style of filmmaking? I quite enjoy “chaos cinema”. Depends on my mood. Personally I can make out 90% of everything that’s happening in high energy scenes, and can easilly tell one’s mood. Not ALWAYS, I admit. There’s that 10 percent there. As for the shaky cam, especially Cloverfeild, I fricken love that stuff. It’s exciting, exhilerating, and novel. New. Then again I don’t suffer from motion sickness.

  4. He makes a lot of good points, but his voice and accent are fucking annoying.

  5. personally, i don’t get the whole “chaos cinema is a bad thing” attitude. yes, you can “cheat” by using faster cuts, but who speaks of cheating in the CGI days anyway?
faster cuts deliver the stress and the adrenalin rush much better, i as a viewer feel much more immersed in the action.
i’m not saying modern movies are better than the classics, on the contrary, many modern stuff is all about special effects and not so keen on story and logic, but to me chaos cinema is just another editing technique, not something that “plagues” today’s movies.
