FREE concert, Raymond Scott hommage @ Jazz Festival

I saw this concert with friends this winter and it was excellent, so I'm spreading the word for those who might be interested in Montreal.
This is an invitation to the FREE Concordia Raymond Scott "Quintette" concert at the MIJF on July 5th at 4:00 pm on the outdoor stage next to Complexe Desjardins:
For those who saw the big show in March, we have prepared 9 new pieces, doubling our repertoire, so expect a whole bunch of new stuff.
For those unfamiliar with the project, here is an article.
This is a great family show, all ages love Raymond Scott music, so come on out with kids or parents or both...
you can also see some past performances on the YouTube page from the March spectacle. hope to see you there!

Raymond Scott is most famous for Powerhouse, used in many cartoons.

“Believe Me, It’s Torture,”

I don't really like Christopher Hitchens. He's a Marxist, he supports the Iraq War and he's a drunk. Signs of a great personnality... Also, he thinks waterboarding isn't torture. Or at least he used to. When he claimed on Slate.com that waterboarding isn't torture, his outraged commenters challenged him to try it out. And to his credit, he did try it.

You can watch the video of the waterboarding session here.

As you can see, he didn't hold for very long. And he was forced to admit in this Vanity Fair article:
You may have read by now the official lie about this treatment, which is that it “simulates” the feeling of drowning. This is not the case. You feel that you are drowning because you are drowning—or, rather, being drowned, albeit slowly and under controlled conditions and at the mercy (or otherwise) of those who are applying the pressure.

It's a bitch to drown? No shit!

Also, a NYT article related to this.
The military trainers who came to Guantánamo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of “coercive management techniques” for possible use on prisoners, including “sleep deprivation,” “prolonged constraint,” and “exposure.”

What the trainers did not say, and may not have known, was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners.

How many kinds of stupid is this adminstration?

Dr. Henry Morgentaler to receive Order of Canada

The Order of Canada is the highest civilian honour in the country. Henry Morgentaler, an abortionist, is the leading militant for abortion rights in Canada.

IN BEFORE SHITSTORM!

lol Conservatives are gonna get an aneurysm. In all seriousness though, that guy is a fucking hero. A Holocaust survivor who did jail time in Canada to provide women with safe abortions. The Conservative government is gonna throw a fit about this, but there ain't much they can do to stop it. It should be entertaining.

Edit: Amanda linked to it, let's hope this gets traction.

John McCain is an hero

So ret. General Wesley Clark says, "I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down [like John McCain in 'Nam] is a qualification to become president" and the media gets its panties in a twist like a catholic school girl. John McCain, like Robert Mugabe, is An Hero. So it doesn't matter what someone like Wesley Clark, someone who managed to win a war, has to say about people like McCain, someone who wants to stay in Iraq for the next 100 years.
Update: Wesley Clark isn't backing down. Good for him!

it's RATURDAY!

Ratzi's bath
The dots you see floating in the air are water drops flying in all directions when Ratzi shakes to dry himself like a dog. I snapped the picture just at the right moment by pure chance. Eli and Ratzi don't like to bath, my hands and forearms are all scratched.
Eli's bath
Normally you don't really need to bath rats, but I'v noticed scabs lately on Eli and particularly Ratzi. I think it might be mites or some kind of rat-specific parasite not visible to the eye. They had those scabs when I got them from the pet-shop a year ago. I gave them a bath with a dog shampoo and the scabs seemed to have dissapear, until now. Anyone ever had that problem?
